According to the latest WOAH situation report for the period ending February 16th, two new events were recorded from the previous period with a recurrence of ASF in Europe (Moldova) and a first occurrence in Asia (Singapore). Further, an ASF reoccurrence in early Feb on a Hong Kong farm near the border of mainland China also started outside of the reporting period but had not yet been recorded in a previous situation report. A total of 8 new outbreaks were recorded in domestic swine, and 41 in the wild boar population in the latest period. One African country reported additional outbreaks in its on-going event, while six European countries also updated with new outbreaks in on-going ASF events including the Czech Republic, Hungary, Latvia, Moldova, North Macedonia and Romania.

Since the start of 2021, 7 countries reported their first occurrences of ASF, while 9 other countries already affected reported additional areas or zones with ASF. According to WOAH, ASF has been present in a total of 41 countries and has resulted in more than a million animal losses.

Total domestic pig losses which includes animal deaths or kill/disposed of as a result of ASF (though not culled for prevention) were recorded at 20 in the latest situation report, bringing the total to 1.022 million farmed swine losses since the start of 2021. Notably, 856 thousand head or 83.6% of these animal losses were recorded in the European region—where ASF outbreaks have been spread by the wild boar population. For comparison, total losses in Asia account for 12.9% of the global total recorded since January 2021.
