Monthly US Retail & Wholesale Meat Prices Climb In June

  • US retail pork prices for the month of June were higher overall, excluding boneless chops, with many pork categories recording historically high prices. Total chops fell -1.5% to $4.07/lb which is -0.5% under the same month last year. Bacon prices climbed +0.5% to $7.40/lb for the month, notably the second highest historically behind Apr’22 at $7.42, and current prices are +11% over last year. Total hams rose +4.5% from a month earlier to $4.12/lb, reaching a new historical high over the previous recorded in Feb’22 at $4.06/lb, and current prices are up +9.1% over year ago levels. Other pork was up +2.1% in the latest data to $3.68/lb, also a new historical high, which is +8.9% over year ago levels.
  • US pork cutout for June at $109.49/cwt rose +4.8% from May levels and are -11.2% under year ago levels. Most wholesale pork primals improved from a month earlier, excluding ribs, however primals continue below year ago levels with exception to hams which are +8.6% over 2021.

  • Monthly US retail beef prices generally increased from last reported, excluding beef roasts which declined from a month earlier. Uncooked beef roasts slipped –2.2% to $6.78/lb which is –0.6% under last year. Uncooked ground climbed +1.3% to $5.40/lb which is +10.9% over last year, steaks increased +1.4% to $9.83/lb bringing them +0.9% over 2021, while other beef edged +0.8% higher to $6.66/lb which is +5.4% over last year.
  • Choice cutout was up +2.9% in June to $267.87/cwt bringing them –17.4% under last year, while select cutout climbed +0.6% to $246.73/cwt on the month and is –15.8% under last year.

  • US retail broiler prices were up +1.3% to $2.45/lb for June, bringing them +19.4% over year ago prices, while wholesale broilers rose +2.5% on the month to $1.29/lb which is +38.6% over 2021.
