US Retail Meat Prices Remain Above Year Ago Levels

  • US retail pork prices for the month of May varied with generally modest moves. Bacon prices slipped -0.8% to $7.36/lb for the month and is +16.0% over last year, while chops declined -1.1% to $4.13/lb which is +6.6% over the same month in 2021. Total hams climbed +0.4% from a month earlier to $3.94/lb and is up +8.2% compared to year-ago levels, while Other pork was up +0.9% in the latest data to $3.61/lb which is +12.2% over year-ago levels.
     
  • US pork cutout for May at $104.43/cwt fell -2.0% from April levels and are -11.1% under year-ago levels. Most wholesale pork primals continue below year-ago levels, excluding hams which are near even with 2021.

  • Monthly US retail beef prices slipped from a month earlier, however hold above year-ago levels. Uncooked ground declined -1.5% to $5.33/lb which is +13.4% over last year, steaks edged -0.1% lower to $9.69/lb bringing them +6.3% over 2021, while roasts were up +0.1% to $6.93/lb which is +6.5% over last year, and other beef (not veal) fell -3.9% to $6.61/lb which is +10.9% over May 2021.
     
  • Choice cutout was down -3.1% in May to $260.44/cwt bringing them -18.0% under last year, while select cutout fell -4.9% to $245.34/cwt on the month and is -17.2% under last year.

  • US retail broiler prices were up +1.2% to $2.42/lb for May, bringing them +18.7% over year-ago prices, while wholesale broilers rose +11.2% on the month to $1.26/lb which is +32.7% over 2021.
