Canadian Retail Pork Prices Rise in December

Canadian retail pork prices increased overall in December, excluding loins, however were primarily under prices recorded for the same time last year.  Canadian Retail Pork Table

Pork loins overall were recorded at $8.61/kg, falling -7.1% from November into December. This brought Canadian loins -6.3% under December 2023 and -3.5% under the 3-year average. Loins are most expensive in Alberta at $9.18/kg, followed by Quebec at $9.01/kg. Ontario loins recorded the lowest price at $8.02/kg while remaining provinces were $8.72-$8.96/kg.

Canadian pork ribs were up +2.7% in December to $8.66/kg, down -10.8% compared to last year and -8.1% under the 3-year average. Rib prices out of Quebec were highest at a$10.20/kg, followed by Alberta at $6.53/kg. Ontario and New Brunswick recorded the lowest rib prices at $7.91/kg & $7.97/kg respectively, while remaning provinces were $8.35-$9.19/kg.

Overall, pork shoulders surged higher to $9.36/kg, recording a +41.8% jump from November into December. The latest Canadian pork shoulder prices are up +29.5% compared to a year earlier, and up +31.7% above the 3-year average. Shoulders were most expensive out of BC at a price of $10.49/kg, generally starting highest out West and falling progressively out eastward with Nova Scotia the lowest at $8.27/kg.

Canadian bacon prices for December at $6.83/kg increased +7.2% from the month previous, bringing them -2.4% under a year earlier. For comparison, the latest retail bacon prices in Canada are up +0.5% over the 3-year average. Retail bacon prices are highest in the western half of the country (BC through MB), while being most affordable in Ontario and Quebec.
