US Slaughter Update

  • The latest US federally inspected hog slaughter was reported at 2,506 thousand head: down 59 thousand head or -2.3% from the previous week, -1.6% below the same week last year and +1.2% over last year-to-date.
  • US Federally inspected slaughter on a cumulative level has risen or held constant since the middle of May with the last week reporting a cumulative 0.1% decline, the first cumulative decline since the week of May 4th
  • US sow slaughter fell -3.9% or 3,600 head lower from the week prior to 52,200 head, which is +3.9% above last year and up +1.4% above last year-to-date.
  • Sow slaughter has made a notable trend change with volumes prior to June consistently above year ago levels however since the first week in June sow slaughter has not registered significantly lower levels than the same reported weeks in 2023.
  • Weekly average barrow and gilt weights in the ISM reporting area for the week ending Sep 14th were reported at 283.5 lbs, down 0.5 of a pound or -0.2% from a week earlier but up +1.4% over year-ago levels. Year-to-date, current hog weights are up +1.3% compared to the same weeks in 2023.
