The latest monthly US livestock and meat trade data recorded pork exports at 526.7 million pounds, up 22.0m pounds in August and brought current pork exports 14.3m pounds over last year. Compared to last year-to-date, US pork exports for 2023 are up 336.6m pounds or +8.1% higher compared to the same months in 2022.
US pork to Mexico rose 22.5m pounds, the greatest month-over-month rise of major destinations for US pork, up 14.2m pounds over last year. Japan increased imports of US pork by 9.1m pounds in August, up 8.4m pounds from a year earlier. US pork to Canada rose 5.5m pounds for August and is 7.6m pounds over last year, while the Dominican Republic rose 4.9m pounds on the month and is up 3.8m pounds over 2022, and Honduras jumped 3.0m pounds from July and is 1.0m pounds over August 2022.
US pork to China* (including Hong Kong & Taiwan) dropped 7.9m pounds in August, down a hefty 25.7m from a year earlier. Australia dropped 5.1m pounds from last reported however is 9.4m pounds over last year, while the Philippines dropped 4.8m pounds on the month and is 7.0m pounds under a year earlier.
US pork imports were generally stable in August, up a modest 379 thousand pounds or +0.4% higher on the month, however is down 16.2m pounds or -14.5% from last year and 196.9m pounds or -20.9% under last year-to-date. For comparison, the US imported 15.5m pounds more pork from Canada than it exported to the country in the month of August.
